FR: Option to choose units

Postby crozdog on Mon Feb 22, 2010 7:33 pm

Hi, i just found your spreadsheet & have to say it is an impressive bit of work - well done! :!: its a pity i only have access to the latest version of Office at work :( How is the open office version progressing?

I would like to suggest that you incorporate a preferences section ie allow users to select wether they use metric or imperial units ie ounces vs grams, pounds vs kg, Degrees F vs degrees C, gallons vs litres etc. I recognise that you have a great range of conversions in the calculators tab, but it is a major pain to have to convert each & every item instead of the spreadsheet working in the selected units.

As an Aussie, I never use imperial measurements and actually find it confusing when I have to.

cheers

Right on, thanks! I'm glad you're enjoying it. I definitely need finish the update for metric units which I planned before school. Especially now that I've gone through the WBA program I even mash in Celsius (though my brain still ferments in Fahrenheit).

The Open Office port is going to take a big longer, but I should hopefully have a significant update for the spreadsheet in the coming months.

If you find any other items, have any other suggestions, let me know and I'll do what I can.

Prost!

Thanks Diesel. Any idea when you might be able to get this suggestion & the OO port out? not trying to be pushy, just interested.

A few other things I just noticed:
1. belgian candi sugar (rocks or liquid) is not on the list of graind / adjuncts
2. you work in SRM, any chance of having the option for EBC?
3. Can i simply add other ingredients to the relevant tabs? i ask as there are a lot of Aussie malts not on it + kiwi hops (which you've already recognised) which we use here.

Wish I could help with the coding/porting, but my skills relate to large networks & datacentres not coding - sorry. Am happy to volunteer as a tester. I also have a few useful spreadsheets I could send you that might be useful additions eg keg line balancing; bulk priming; hot/cold water mixture calculation, depth;volume, volume:depth, refractometer (brix:SG); Refractometer (during fermentation),electric HLT heat time.

I've just started mucking arould with some calcs working out how much heat / energy is required for step mashes with the view to determining the amount of steam energy required. Be interested if you could have a look at it.

Drop me an email & I'll send em over if you're interested.

BTW, what's the WBA program?

No ETA on the update at the moment, but I'll keep you posted.

1 & 3 - Yeah, you can simply add additional items to the Hops, Grains, Yeast tabs as you have access to them. I need to add the steps to the FAQ on this. Since it's just a spreadsheet you can add any ingredients you like. So if you've got sugars, grains or hops that you use which are not there, you can insert them into the Grains, Hops or Yeast tabs. The easiest way to do this is find the row where you want to insert it, then hit Shift-Space (to select the whole row), then hit Ctrl-Shift-+ (control-shift-plus) which will insert a new row at that spot. Then you can fill in all the relevant details.

2 - I'll try to make all the units configurable, including SRM & EBC.

As I get some changes implented, I'll include you on some testing. Thanks. And yeah, if there are any functions missing from spreadsheets that you also use, let me know and I will try to include them. That was my original goal when I started making this for myself, I wanted to stop using multiple tools and put everything in one. I think some of those functions are already in the Calculators tab, like the Electrical Heating, there is the "Dilution" calculator, which I should just make a generic mixing formula calculator since it's the same formula for temps, gravities, etc. But definitely let me know what tools are missing that should be included there. I'll hit you up on email too.

WBA is the World Brewing Academy. Check this out:

I still have a lot of photos and stories to sort and post.

Croz - totally got them, wrote half a response, but I've been appreciating beer. Tonight was the Goose Island event at Blind Tiger. One of my favorite midwest breweries at one of my favorite beer bars in NYC. GI brought like 40 beers with them, was chewing the fat with the brewmaster Greg from GI, drank lots of good beers. Anyways, I'll hit you up with details to your answers... tomorrow probably. Prost!
